The district sits on the intersection of the M1 and M62 and has rail links on the East Coast mainline for London, the North East and Scotland plus TransPennine services via Leeds. We are seeking two highly motivated and skilled Consultants in Public Health to join our dynamic and forward-thinking Public Health team. These are full-time posts but applications from those wishing to work less than full-time will be welcomed. Specific portfolios can be negotiated according to the needs of the department and the skills, knowledge and interests of the successful candidates. Wakefield Council is in the first year of its five year Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) project and there is the potential for successful candidates to be involved in this innovative project.
About the Role
You will provide public health expertise for improving health outcomes and reducing health inequalities through delivery of action, influence and advice to the Council, NHS and other wider system partners. Working to the Director of Public Health you will inspire development of innovative solutions and influence action that supports continuous improvement in health and wellbeing. You will be expected to work within and across organisations, be able to influence budgets held by those organisations as well as advocate for change effectively.
You will support the Director of Public Health to discharge the Council’s statutory public health responsibilities and oversee the management of associated resources and staff. You will support Public Health workforce development including undertaking educational supervision for Public Health Registrars and staff seeking professional registration.
The postholder will be expected to operate across all domains of Public Health. Specific portfolios can be explored and negotiated dependent on the needs of the service and the skills, knowledge and interests of the successful candidates.
With a high level of intellectual rigour, negotiation and motivational skills you will deal with complex public health issues, strategies and services, taking a long-term strategic approach to driving improvements in health and a reduction in health inequalities. This is a senior appointment within the Council and the postholder will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership and change management skills.
To be successful you will need to demonstrate the competencies to fulfil a generalist Consultant in Public Health role. You will have inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register / GDC Specialist Register / UK Voluntary Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists or be within 6 months of gaining entry and will be able to evidence CPD requirements in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body.
